Why meditate? To live in the present moment. To dwell in the peaceful harmony of all things. To awaken.
We have all had moments when the feeling of being separate has dissolved. Perhaps sitting by the ocean and the sound of the waves washed away all thinking. What was left was the warmth of the sun on your face, the sound of the waves and the breeze on your cheek. You were lost in the totality of the moment; you were in the flow and there was no separation between you, ocean, sun and breeze.
In moments like this there is peace, harmony and the joy of being. The world appears fresh and we recover our innocent eyes. We have reconnected with our true nature and found the truth, beauty and light we are seeking for outside, already present within us.
Meditation is a method to connect with that inner peace and silence, our awareness that is the enlightened state, here and now.
Applying traditional meditation discipline will calm the mind, allowing us to let go of preconceptions, thoughts and emotions. This does not mean getting rid of, but rather it is to observe that which arises, without pushing away or holding on. We simply rest in our witness awareness, moment to moment.
So to begin, you might like to sit with straight back in a cross-legged position, resting your hands on your knees, lowering your gaze slightly and breathing naturally. At first, focus on your brearth; noticing it, as it enters and leaves the nostrils. Whenever the mind wanders, simply bring your attention back to the breath.
Relax and breathe. Observe things as they are without mental comments. There, that's it. |
